This is a modern reproduction medal, inspired by the Imperial Russian medal “For the Battle of Varyag and Koreets”, approved on June 5, 1904.
The original medal commemorated the naval action near Chemulpo (Incheon, Korea) on January 27, 1904, during the opening phase of the Russo-Japanese War. It was awarded to the sailors of the cruiser Varyag and the gunboat Koreets, who fought against overwhelming Japanese forces.
- Obverse: Cross of St. George within a laurel wreath, with the inscription: “For the Fight of the Varyag and the Koreets on January 27, 1904 – Chemulpo”.
- Reverse: Scene of the naval battle, showing Varyag and Koreets heading into action against the Japanese squadron, with a cross above symbolizing memory and sacrifice.
- Ribbon: The Russian naval St. Andrew’s flag – white field with a blue diagonal cross.
