This is a modern reproduction medal, inspired by the award established by Empress Catherine II on August 21, 1789. The original medal commemorated the Battle of Rochensalm (August 13, 1789), where the Russian fleet defeated the Swedish squadron during the Russo-Swedish War (1788–1790).
