This is a modern reproduction medal, inspired by the commemorative award “In Memory of the 200th Anniversary of the Naval Battle of Gangut,” established in 1914. The original medal was created to mark two centuries since the victory of the Russian fleet over Sweden at Cape Gangut on July 27, 1714 — the first naval victory in Russian history during the Great Northern War.

The medal was originally intended for members of the Imperial family, officers, naval and army personnel, descendants of veterans of the 1714 battle, and government officials connected to the anniversary celebrations. In total, 94,000 medals were struck, though only about 20,000 were distributed before the outbreak of World War I halted the celebrations.
