This medal is a carefully made reproduction of the original Imperial Russian award established in 1809. The original was issued to commemorate a pivotal event during the Russo-Swedish War of 1808–1809. It was awarded to soldiers from General P.A. Shuvalov's corps, who successfully crossed the Torneo River (now Tornio River) into Swedish territory—a significant military maneuver.

A total of 6,269 silver medals were minted and awarded to Russian troops who participated in the crossing, marking the final stages of the war that led to the Treaty of Fredrikshamn and Russia’s acquisition of Finland.
