This silvered star is a reproduction of the French Legion of Honour breast star for the Grand Cross of the order (Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur), France's highest distinction for military and civil merit. Established in 1802 by Napoléon Bonaparte, the order has long symbolized excellence and service to the nation.

The example offered here represents the post-1970 design from the Third Republic. It is traditionally worn on the left breast, while the medal of the order is suspended from a wide scarlet shoulder sash, draped over the shoulder and tied in a bow at the left hip.
