The Cross of St. George was founded in 1807 as the Russian Empire’s highest gallantry award for enlisted men and NCOs who showed personal courage in battle. It was issued in four classes, from 4th up to 1st, and worn on the distinctive black-and-orange “St. George” ribbon, symbolizing smoke and fire of combat. After the revolution the award lapsed, but the tradition was later revived and the Cross re-entered Russia’s awards system in 1992. This piece reproduces the classic imperial design for display and study.
