It was awarded to soldiers for acts of distinguished service and was worn immediately after the Medal of Honor and before campaign medals.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe first medal was presented to \u003cstrong\u003eFirst Lieutenant William B. Baker\u003c\/strong\u003e in 1907 (for actions as a corporal in the Spanish–American War, 1898).
